Quebecgen.ca allows you to freely search for the marriage of a couple from the beginning of the colony up to around the 1950s through its database, which contains over 2 million marriages from Quebec, Ontario, Canadian, and American parishes.
In addition to the fact that access is completely FREE, we have undertaken to search for the marriages of the parents of the spouses on each of the marriage records. To date, we have connected about 40% of the parents of a groom or bride to their wedding.
We have developed several tools to help you access answers to the questions you have more quickly.
The first method is to use, from the menu at the top of the page, « Research » and then click on « For a wedding ». You fill out the questionnaire that appears in the left column and check, if applicable, the box that appears next to it. So at least the name and first name of one of the spouses. Obviously, if you put the names and first names of both spouses, the list of suggestions will be shorter. Click on the suggestion that you think is the correct answer. A document appears to you presenting the information we have following this wedding.
You first find the names of the parents (when they are present), the name of the deceased spouse (when applicable), and sometimes next to these names a small (+). Click on this (+) and you will find the details about the couple in question. You will also note that we provide you with details about the marriage of the couple's children that you are looking for... when we have found them.
It is possible that we do not have information about the great-grandfather, but the (+) stops with the grandparents. Take the name of the grandparents and restart the search as we indicate in « How to find a marriage ».
There are several possibilities.
a) The marriage you are looking for is in the database, but the spelling of the names may be different from the one under which you are currently searching for the marriage. Ex. Décarie. The name may have been spelled in different ways. As an example for Décarie, we outline at least the following spellings : Décarie, Decary, Descaries, Descaris, Descarries, Descarry and like nickname Lehoux, Lebron. The same goes for first names, (Different spellings and variations : Isabelle, Elisabeth, Elizabeth, Beth...)
b) The marriage you are looking for is in a parish that we have not processed in our database. Therefore, you will need to search elsewhere than with us.
c) We foolishly made a mistake in entering the data. It's unfortunate but it's possible. A rate of 0.05% errors (5 hundredths of a percent) gives us 10,000 errors.
Before giving up this search on our site, you should try other avenues of research.
One way to search is to take only the first name and last name of one spouse and start the search. Then to search by the name and first name of the other spouse. Then, you can try by only using the last names of the spouses without the first names.
These tools are only useful to you as long as we have connected the marriages between generations. We have connected about 40% of the parents in the records with their respective marriages.
These tools allow you to create a linear or fan genealogy (up to 5 generations) very quickly. For more details about each of the couples found there, you must click on the small (+) next to the name.
